For sculptor Loren Miller, his art began with a search for a new art medium. He began experimenting with aluminum plate and dynamite. High explosive material has been used in many disciplines, commercial, industrial, and even in the creation of art. While many are intrigued by the brute force and destructive power of high explosives, his work is not a focus on the methods as much as it is an expression of materials formed by the explosive energy. It is a push against the focus on calculated and controlled artisanship striving more towards creative invention. The clash of these forces and materials depicted in his art represent the balance of chaos, order, and life’s challenges.
“I want the materials and my working methods to be true to themselves. I find it important to accept and respect what the materials and actions reveal just as much as anything I might do to alter the outcome. Each work is unique and impossible to replicate. I want it that way and is why I minimize the use of computers or mechanical methods sometimes employed in sculpture. Amidst all the chaos of the formative destructive power of my work, there is a flowing calmness and order. In its most basic interpretation, it is about struggles and the balance of life’s chaos and order. It is a fine line and we slip back and forth. ”Loren Miller
