What is an overdenture you may ask? Below on your left, you see a traditional denture, that usually needs some denture adhesive to stay in properly. On your right, you see an overdenture which is a massive improvement from your traditional denture. An overdenture is still similar to a traditional denture however we can utilize dental implants to retain the denture by integrating snaps (much like the buttons on a pair of pants) between the implants integrated in the bone and the inside surface of the denture. This allows for a much tighter and better fit. The size of the overdenture can also be reduced if an appropriate number of implants are used in the ideal locations. Imagine an upper denture that snaps in AND stays in only to be removed when you are ready. An overdenture uses the patient’s existing soft tissue for support but has the enhanced retention to the implants, ultimately removing the need for traditional denture adhesives, think –NO MORE POLIGRIP. Patients experience a world of difference in how well an overdenture fits and stays in place as compared to your regular traditional denture.
